Platform pedals get their name because of their shape - big and square. They make for very stable "platforms" to ride with. They usually have a metal body with pins or screws sticking out of them for ultimate grip. Where protective pads when riding with these!

These are a very expensive set of pedals to buy. But they come with a built in bottle opener so that's okay then ;) Seriously though with sealed bearings, a very large platform for your feet, BIG grippy pins and a 2 year unconditional warranty on the axles I can't complain.
