Caged pedals are often of similar proportions to platforms but, instead of the more solid body they have metal strips attached to a small body. These strips come with sharp teeth that bite in to the sole of your shoe to provide grip almost as good as platforms. You still want to were pads on your shins for this type of pedal!

These things came with a warning label attached. No wonder with two spiked cages giving a large and very grippy platform for your feet. Sealed bearings and all at a knock down price. A definate good buy!
